In this case are the carvings by my father,
Charles Frederick Klein, Jr.
He was disciplined and precise in his methods,
an inspiration indeed.
He told me:
“if you don’t build castles
in the air,
you’ll never build them
anywhere”.
“The Big Apple Machine”, Graphite on Paper.
New York, the subject for all my “castles in the air”.

Paintings are the sum of their surface:
There is the canvas/linen or board, the gesso, a drawing or grid, the light undercoating of paint, sometimes the surface covered entirely in white, with just the smallest amount of oil added. The second layer is added, more medium is used (wax and/or oils) along with the pigments, and depending on the painting, more layers may be added. The pigments are organic, synthetic and mineral; they are pre-mixed and powder. When the paint is completely dry, the varnish is applied, then the frame.
